The supermarket chain responded to the social media outrage today, claiming that their On The Go range offers customers better value for money

After changing the rules on what can be included in the £3 deal, Sainsbury’s customers slammed the firm for excluding its premium Taste The Difference range from the money-saving offer.

The meal deal, which has been rebranded as ‘On The Go’, features fewer options than before, with customers no longer able to choose freely from the popular selection of sushi, subs, cakes, fruits and drinks.

One furious customer even claimed on Twitter that the changes had ruined their life, adding: "Guess I’ll just starve at lunch now.”

But the supermarket chain responded to the social media outrage today, claiming that their On The Go range offers customers better value for money.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told The Sun: “We have invested millions of pounds improving the quality and value of our sandwich range. Customers can still enjoy our great value £3 meal deal and the sandwiches in the deal are now better quality and better value.

"Where sandwiches are no longer in the meal deal, we have improved the quality and maintained or reduced the price."

The supermarket chain said it was aware of the social media backlash, but wanted to assure meal deal enthusiasts that they aren't losing out as a result of these controversial changes.

A spokesperson added: "Our new On the Go range also includes a much wider ranges of sandwiches, salads and sushi than it did before.

We think that, once customers try the new range, they will like it.”

It remains to be seen whether customers will be satisfied by the response, as the wrath of hungry shoppers is showing so signs of letting up on Twitter.

One furious customer wrote: "What are Sainsbury's playing at taking all the nice sandwiches out their meal deal? I've been loyal for 3 years but now it's Tesco time."

Another angry shopper claimed he was "outraged" that his favourite ham hock sandwich was off the menu, whilst plenty more claimed they were "off to Tesco" as a result of the changes.
