BLOOMIN' BENEFITS

Pottering in the garden for half an hour a day reduces risk of heart attack and is a lifesaver

The 12-year study found gardeners and walkers 54 per cent less likely to suffer heart-related death than couch potatoes

OAPs can slash the risk of a fatal heart attack or stroke by pottering in the garden for half an hour a day.

Gentle strolls and a spot of fishing also protect pensioners.

The more exercise the better, and people are never too old to feel the benefit, say experts.

A 12-year study found gardeners and walkers were 54 per cent less likely to suffer a heart-related death than couch potatoes.

Those who ran, jogged or swam for at least three hours a week cut the risk by two-thirds.

The first group were 31 per cent less likely to have a heart attack, rising to 45 per cent for the second, it was said.

Prof Riitta Antikainen, of the University of Oulu in Finland, who studied almost 2,500 adults aged 65 to 74, said leisure activity had a “protective effect” on hearts.

She added: “The more you do, the better.”
