A STRUGGLING chippe owner has seen his fortunes turn upside down after a kind customer decided to give him a helping hand.
Colin Ross, 31, from Alberta, Canada, visited Whitbie's Fish and Chips in the town of Lethbridge last Saturday morning after a night out, hoping some fish and chips would sort out his hangover.
After ordering some 'spectacular' halibut, he noticed the restaurant was clean and well-kept - but also that it was completely empty.
Colin told : "I just came in and walked in the door and saw this old guy just sitting there in a chair.
“There wasn’t another soul in the place.”
“I was just blown away. [The owner] said he hasn’t been able to pay himself, and the last few months have been the worst he’s ever been though."
Colin, whose career background is in marketing, offered to help the owner - Scottish immigrant John McMillan, aged 69.
But after John refused, Colin took it upon himself to post a glowing review of the traditional British establishment on Facebook, where he has over 2,000 friends - and it turned out to be just what the restaurant needed.
In his post, he wrote: "I have a big heart and want people to do well, especially a 70-year-old man who has put in his time.
"The owner was a gem, a real classy stand up guy, so I ask everyone in Lethbridge to share this and go support this hard working gentleman, he deserves it."
Incredibly, the post was then shared over 8,000 times - and best of all, Whitbie's has been inundated with business to the point that John has had to recruit family and friends to help serve customers.
John told that things had been "absolutely terrible", but they have now turned around.
He said: "Our business has just gone right through the roof to the point where, you know, we've got people waiting an hour and a half to an hour and three quarters for their dinner."
Meanwhile, in his interview with Buzzfeed, Colin added: "[John's] just really good-hearted, super awesome guy. I got a really good vibe right off the bat."
