Seven weird ways to catch an STI you probably don’t know about… and NONE of them involve having sex
From towels to tanning beds... you may not know the risks of doing these things
IT’S a well-known fact that having unprotected sex can put you at risk of catching sexually transmitted diseases.
But you may not know about these seven other ways of getting infected, which have absolutely NOTHING to do with actually having sex.
From sharing towels and razors to using tanning beds, and even dry humping, an STI can be transferred in the most unusual ways.
Luckily for us, sexperts at have compiled a list, so you know when you’re putting yourself at risk of infection.
Tanning beds
STI – Herpes and genital warts
Many people tan nude and breakouts can occur anywhere in the body, before transferring onto the bed.
Rising temperatures tend to kill bacteria, making hot tubs safe from these nasty infections, but this does NOT apply to tanning beds.
Beards
STI – Crabs, scabies and herpes
This is rare but parasitic infections can get caught in the beards – especially after oral sex with an infected person.
Waxing
STI – herpes
It’s unlikely, but not impossible.
The experts advise delaying a waxing session if your skin is irritated or cracked in any way.
Kissing
STI – Herpes and genital herpes
If the person has a visible cut or blister around the mouth, we don't recommend kissing them.
But beware, even if the infected kisser is not in the middle of a flare up, you could still catch their infection.

Dry humping
STI – Syphilis, crabs, herpes and HPV
Quite a few STIs can be transferred through skin-to-skin contact, not just through oral or penetrative sex.
Rubbing lumps and bumps can lead to warts, crabs and herpes being transferred over.
Some viral and bacterial infections can also be passed on through humping.
Razors
STI – Herpes or HPV
Do you ever borrow your flatmate’s razor, or use a friend’s if you’re getting ready at their house?
Well don’t! Shaving often leads to nicked skin, leaving you potentially vulnerable to infection from a dirty razor – including an STI if the owner happens to be carrying one.
Towels
STI – Crabs, scabies, trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis is caused by a tiny parasite, and it can give the infected person thick green discharge, itchy vaginal inflammation, pain when weeing or having sex, and needing to wee more regularly than normal.
It can live outside the body for up to 45 minutes, particularly thriving in damp conditions.
