These are the five foods you should be eating to boost your sex drive
It's not just oysters and asparagus that can get your juices flowing again
IS your sex life falling a bit flat?
If your libido is limper than a week-old lettuce it could all be down to what is going in your shopping trolley.
Your sex drive can be hugely influenced by your diet and stocking up on a few everyday essentials can give it the boost it needs.
These are the five things you need to eat to get your libido back on track, according to nutritionist Jackie Newson, of .
Green vegetables
Fatigue is a number one passion killer and greens are a great energy booster.
Jackie said: "Raising energy is dependent on key nutrients like vitamin C and iron.
"Low iron is known to contribute to fatigue, since it is involved in the production of haemoglobin and the oxygenation of red blood cells.
“Vitamin C significantly improves the absorption of iron so it's important to get this combination in your foods. We also need vitamin C for the synthesis ofcarnitine, which is another nutrient necessary for energy production."
TRY: Dark-green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, kale, cabbage and broccoli. Alos eat oranges and kiwi fruits for an extra vitamin C boost.
Zinc
Zinc helps us synthesise protein and promotes healing but also boosts the libido, helping with the release of hormones and enhancing fertility.
For men, zinc is a testosterone boost which helps sexual function.
TRY: Dark chocolate (yippee), chicken, crab, cashews, pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate and (yes, they had to be in there) oysters.
Protein
Protein-packed foods contain the amino acid which converts into nitric oxide in the body. This opens the blood vessels and increase blood flow to those all-important erogenous zones.
It is used to treat erectile dysfunction and to increase sensation in female genital areas.
TRY: Turkey, chicken, pork, pumpkin seeds, soya, beans, lentils, peanuts and chickpeas.
Parsnips and Fermented foods
The plant molecule phytoestrogen – found in soya products such as tofu – boost oestrogen levels in women and boosts sexual arousal.
Jackie explained: “Low libido, vaginal dryness and painful sex are common around the menopause and have been linked to a reduction in oestrogen levels.
“Fermented soya foods provide easily digestible soy isoflavones that can help to get things back to normal."
TRY: Tofu, tempeh and tamari are all good but less exotic foods include parsnips, turnips and soy sauce.
Spicy food
Hot stuff can make you hot stuff in the bedroom. This is because capsaicin, which is the stuff that gives spicy food its heat, triggers endorphins, in turn increasing our sense of pleasure.
It also increasing circulation to the genital area and can contain fenugreek, which increase the production of testosterone and has been found in studies to significantly increase sexual arousal and orgasm.
TRY: Curry, cumin, chillies to spice up your love life.
