See inside the four-bed ‘Hobbit home’ that’s almost completely UNDERGROUND
MOST of us pride ourselves on doing something a little unique with our home.
You might not find yourself splashing £11.5 million on a village like this guy, but perhaps this light and airy property will give you some ideas.
Looking at the pictures you might not notice anything unusual about it, which is why it comes as something of a surprise to find it's almost entirely UNDERGROUND.
Arthur Quarmby created the home in West Yorkshire 41 years ago, but it's more modern than many properties built in the last decade.
It's called Underhill and has stunning views over the Upper Holme Valley.
The home took 18 months to build and had a number of genius inclusions, like sliding windows and roof lighting, which hide the fact it's underground.
The kooky four-bed has been likened to the Hobbit homes seen in J. R. R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, but Arthur assures that he didn't have those in mind when he was designing it.
“It will be hard to leave here,” the 82-year-old great-grandfather, who is married to Jean, admitted.
“We have been here for 41 years and it has been the place where we have raised our children.
"I designed the house with children in mind. We have had a lot of fun in this house over the years but now is the right time to downsize."
Underhill has a suite of rooms for two children and a suite of rooms for the owners... plus a STONE VAULTED CAVE.
Of course there are some of the more normal household rooms too, like a kitchen, utility room and dining areas.
There's a music room as well, plus a separate shower area and whopping 50ft by 40ft swimming pool which is right in the middle of the recreation area.
If you get bored of having a dip you could climb out the pool and nip through the sliding doors onto the terrace, where you can take in the pretty Peak District scenery.
“We are both getting older now and we don’t need to live in such a big house," Arthur said.
"We don’t even use the pool as much as we used to.
"It will be difficult leaving this behind but we are looking to find somewhere else in the area, as my family has lived here for generations.”
Underhill went on the market for £700,000 and has already received an offer.
Still a lot of course, but that's nothing compared to this £55 million mansion.
