Saucy Secret

You’ve been pouring your ketchup all wrong… and there’s a secret clue on the bottle that tells you how

This is what the 57 on the Heinz sauce bottle really means

THE traditional glass ketchup bottle is much more pleasing to the eye than the squeezy variety.

But, as all ketchup lovers know, getting the tasty tomato sauce out of the bottle can be a complete nightmare.

But if you're banging the bottom, you're doing it all wrong.

All these years, those clever chaps at Heinz have been providing a clue to the simple trick to make the sauce flow.

Every bottle has a number “57” etched into the glass neck, originating from the famous “57 varieties” slogan of the brand.

But this is not just pretty packaging. Oh no.

In fact, it has a completely amazing function of its own – as a sweet spot to smack if you want to speed the flow.

The number is placed in a position on the bottle that's easiest to get ketchup out from.

To get the best result, you should turn your ketchup bottle at an angle and hit exactly on the point of the 57 to get maximum stream.

Who knew?

A Heinz spokesman said: “To release ketchup faster from a glass bottle, here is a little secret from Heinz.

"The sweet spot to tap on the Heinz bottle is the 57 on the neck. All you need to do is apply a firm tap where the bottle narrows, and the ketchup will come out easier.”

So all those years we’ve been banging the base and getting nowhere – and the answer was staring us in the face.

Yesterday we revealed that many people store their bread in the wrong place and we recently brought you an amazing hack for peeling potatoes.
