There are just a handful of working post mills left in Britain and the Outwood mill is one of only about 25 windmills of all types that still operate.

Estate agent Robert Leech, a resident of the area for more than 35 years, thinks that the home is every bit as unique as it sounds.

He said: "If you ask anyone if they know of Outwood, I guarantee the response will be along the lines of 'yes, the place with the windmill'.

"Arguably, it is one of the most famous and iconic structures in Surrey.

"Outwood Mill quite literally is unique, being the oldest working windmill [of its kind] in the country, standing serenely in the centre of the common as it has done for hundreds of years and now the chance to own this piece of history could be yours.

"This could be a wonderful opportunity for entrepreneurs to take the windmill forward into the future."

Prospective buyers have the exciting opportunity to be a part of the mill's history, as previous owners opened it up to visitors, who were able to see its unique engineering in action and could even buy a bag of Outwood Mill flour.

The home has an L-shaped entrance hall, a large open-plan kitchen, dining and living area and three bedrooms and two bathrooms.

The grounds of the mill formed an important part of the community, hosting vintage car meets and country food fayres.

As the earliest type of European windmill, the post mill's defining feature is that the whole body is mounted on a single vertical post, around which it can be turned to bring the sails into the wind.

At 39 feet high, with sails measuring 60 feet across, its four millstones grind flour when the wind blows, and the 1,000-year-old oak post that it is built around can be turned to the wind by just one person.

The post mill was built centuries ago by a miller named Thomas Budgen, commencing work a year before the Great Fire of London.

Legend has it that when the millwrights were completing their work, they looked north towards London and saw a vivid red glow in the sky, which was the Great Fire.
