How Love Island has changed! Who remembers the first ever series back in 2005?
From steamy showers to awkward love triangles - we take a look back at the best moments from the original show
THIS series of Love Island has been controversial to say the least.
We’ve had contestants bonking in private – with Zara Holland being stripped of her Miss GB crown as a result – and in front of everyone, which didn’t go down well with viewers.
It makes the original Celebrity Love Island, which aired on ITV in 2005, look pretty tame in comparison.
The show, hosted by Patrick Kielty and Kelly Brook (though Fearne Cotton took over for series two), involved 12 celebs being flown to a tropical island in Fiji for the ‘ultimate summer of love’.
Back then several viewers questioned the ‘celebrity status’ of the participants involved (they don’t seem too bothered these days) and criticised them for being boring.
It was also hated by Coronation Street fans as the soap was moved from 7:30pm to 8:30pm on Monday nights to provide a strong lead-in to the show in an attempt to boost ratings.
But despite the series generally being panned, there were certainly some pretty dramatic moments, and here we run through the best of the bunch.
The love triangle
Eventual winner Jayne Middlemiss, a former glamour model turned TV presenter, fell hard for former Manchester United footballer Lee Sharpe.
But Middlemiss was left brokenhearted when Sharpe confessed his affection for busty blonde Abi Titmuss.
The night before the final, the emotional Geordie lass confronted Sharpe, asking him: "How come you fell for Abi then?"
She later told him: “I'll always be grateful to you for binning me off on national TV.”
Awkward.
But at least the public loved her, as she went on to take the Love Island crown along with Irish nightclub owner and former Westlife bodyguard Fran Cosgrave.
Sadly for Middlemiss, Titmuss and Sharpe went on to have a two-year relationship.
Middlemiss has certainly enjoyed success when it comes to reality shows.
In 2009 she took the title of Celebrity MasterChef and in 2012 she won BBC One's Pointless Celebrities with Jamie Theakston in 2012.
Rebecca’s Loos behaviour
The public were dubious about Loos’ appearance on the show, given her history as David Beckham’s ‘other woman’.
But she certainly came across as very ‘normal’ and down to earth – and at times, pretty goofy.
One evening, shortly after Titmuss had a go at Cosgrave for repeatedly calling her Vanessa Feltz, there was a stunned silence after Loos accidentally let one go.
She later confessed it was “the most embarrassing night of my life”.
Brook you!
One of the most controversial stories to hit the headlines during the first series of Celebrity Love Island was the alleged spat between hosts Kelly Brook and Patrick Kielty.
Brook was reportedly not a happy bunny when Kielty revealed live on air that she had previously enjoyed a relationship with one of the contestants, Paul Danan.
Once the cameras were off, Brook apparently wailed: "You shouldn't have gone there - what did you say that for?"
A source told the Sunday Mirror: "You could almost see the steam coming out of her ears. She went red in the face and just bellowed at Patrick. She was desperate to put him in his place."
Stormy waters
On Friday 10 June a strong storm swept across the island and forced a live eviction to be cancelled, as six foot waves made it impossible for crew-members to film.
ITV was forced to repeat the episode from the previous night with unseen footage which was edited together pretty badly and didn’t do the show any favours.
The storm also meant presenters Brook and Kielty had to spend a night in a rat-infested beach hut as they couldn’t get back to their five-star hotel. Awkward.

Danan on a mission
Actor Paul Danan made headlines during his time on the island for his wild mood swings and flirty behaviour.
The former Hollyoaks star, who played Sol Patrick in the soap between 1997 and 2001, frequently got into scraps with on-off love interest Lady Isabella Hervey as well as male companions Fran Cosgrave and Calum Best.
His turbulent relationship with Lady Hervey kept some viewers hooked, as he desperately tried to win her over with constant cringey compliments and his cheeky chappie attitude.
But he was gutted when Lady Hervey spurned his advances after he asked her if she wanted to share a bed with him in the Love Shack – prompting him to try his luck with pretty much every other girl on the island.
He returned to Love Island for the second series, during which he spent most of his time winding up model Sophie Anderton.
Spelling Bee
Anyone remember that awkward moment Calum Best, a celebrity, struggled to spell the word 'celebrity' to win a trip off the island?
The famous footballer's son failed dismally and that treat ended up going to Titmuss, who impressively managed to spell 'inconsequential'.
She decided to take along hunky Cosgrave for company - who got perturbed when locals at the village market were eyeing up her 'assets' and told her to cover up.
Playboy, hey girl
Seeing ratings dwindle, producers brought in American model Nikki Ziering to spice up the show.
That she did – enjoying a steamy seven-and-a-half-minute shower with, yep, you guessed it, Paul Danan.
This didn’t go down well with her fellow contestants, and Ziering was accused of being a "sex-mad slapper".
And even fickle Paul said he prefers his girls to be more 'real'.
Ouch.
