SEX statistics have revealed that Britons are having less intercourse than before and the film streaming site Netflix is to blame, according to an expert.

David Spiegelhalter, a Cambridge University statistician, claims to have figured out why sex statistics have been steadily declining over the past few years.

The trusted statistician and author of Sex By Numbers believes the increasing popularity of film streaming site Netflix is responsible for the decline in sexual activity.

While speaking to an audience at the Hay Festival, Professor Spiegelhalter said: "People are having less sex.

"Sexually active couples between 16 and 64 were asked and the median was five times in the last month in 1990, then four times in 2000 and three times in 2010.

"At this rate, by 2030 couples are not going to be having any sex at all.

"You say why? Statisticians say I don't know.

"One of the researchers mentioned the word iPad. I think it's the box set, Netflix. OMG I've got to watch the entire second series of Game of Thrones."

Previously, researchers have found links between a person's sleep levels and their sex drive so there could be a correlation between watching another episode of your favourite TV show on Netflix before bed and a loss of libido.

This news comes just a few days after the British ice-cream brand, , announced their new product, ‘commitment rings’, which ensure spouses always watch their favourite programmes together.

Only when the rings are in close proximity that that the app will detect it and unblock the show.
