MedExpress, a pharmaceutical company, quizzed over 2,000 sexually active adults aged over 21 about why they called time on their romance.

Over half said they broke it off after falling out of love while 27 per cent admitted that one person had contracted a STD.

More than two thirds of those who were caught out with an infection – or caught their partner out – said that it led to mistrust.

But is seems we are a forgiving bunch.

When asked if they would date someone who admitted they had an incurable sexually transmitted disease, 31 per cent said yes.

Michael Ross, a spokesperson for MedExpress, said: "Sexually transmitted diseases have a huge stigma attached to them, even when we have technology and knowledge to fully educate ourselves on topics.

"Of course it is not okay to sleep with someone when you have an STI without telling them or trying to protect them from it however it is totally unfair to penalise someone who may be perfect for you in every way, simply because they have an STI or STD, especially if it is one that doesn’t have a cure."

He added: "Remember not to be rude to those who have unfortunately made that mistake or been lied to.

“It should be about the person, not the STI."

Meanwhile, new research recently revealed that pubic hair can actually ward off a host of nasty infections.

Waxing, shaving or epilating the follicles off can increase the risk of contracting conditions, including genital warts and herpes.
