Bionic pooch
Cute Cocker Spaniel Cookie is the first in the UK to get bionic paws on Channel 4’s Supervet
The adorable pooch had been paralysed from birth and will show the results of her op to host Noel Fitzpatrick
Cocker spaniel Cookie is a whirlwind of energy after becoming the first dog in the UK to receive TWO bionic paws.
The poor puppy, who has had been partially paralysed since birth, gets her new feet in Wednesday night's Supervet on Channel 4.
Rescue dog Cookie suffered from a cyst on her spinal cord and that left her nerves so damaged her back legs were paralysed.
While an op to remove the cyst gave her back some movement, the nerves in her feet were too damaged to recover. When vets then discovered she also needed a double hip replacement it looked like she would be put down.
However, Cookie’s new owner Fay Buckle refused to give up and Cookie underwent pioneering bionic technology which saw Cookie’s new feet attached implanted into her leg bones with new technology.
Cookie remained at the practice for another six weeks to ensure that the implants were healing in the bottom of her shin bone. Thankfully, the bone and skin fused well to the implants and Cookie was up and about on her new feet almost straight away.
Once she was strong, Cookie then had two total hip replacements, a procedure, which involves cutting out the whole of the diseased hip joint. The tops of her legs, as well as the ball and socket were all replaced with metal and plastic implants and relocated to move as before but without pain.
Since then Cookie has recovered with physio and hydrotherapy and is now a bundle of energy.
Supervet Noel Fitzpatrick, who has coincidentally had recent surgery on one of his own feet, said: "Cookie is a magnificently joyful puppy, who has been incredibly patient during a very long journey of recovery from multiple diseases.
“Every time we saw her she was waggy-tailed, smiling, and licking everyone’s faces. All of my colleagues at the practice are in love with her from ward staff right through to all the nurses and vets.
“Her journey began with a cyst on her spine causing paralysis which required spinal surgery, then replacing both of her back feet which had no feeling with prosthetics. Then finally a double hip replacement for bad arthritis secondary to hip dysplasia. What an expedition!"
Supevet Noel has also had surgery on his foot and reveals it’s made him understand his patient even better.
He said: “Having just had surgery myself and with my foot in a cast, I’m currently supposed to be on “cage-rest” I have more sympathy and empathy than ever for my patients. Cookie wanted to run around long before she was allowed to do so, and I share her frustrations on my crutches. I think my own surgery is nature’s way of bringing me closer to not only what my patients go through physically but also mentally. I’m rearing to get back in the surgical saddle – and Cookie gives me hope – because now she finally is running around the field. One small hairy fluffy bundle of hope with two bionic feet, two bionic hips, and a boisterously bionic attitude to life.
"Every day is a good day when your pain is gone and soon hopefully I’ll also be able to run in the field – and importantly – to get back into that operating theatre. There’s a lot more Bonnie’s out there just yearning to be able to run too – I’m ‘willing’ my ankle to heal as fast as possible – so I can get on with the job of fixing more furry friends and seeing their smile."
Watch Cookie and Noel in The Supervet airing on Wednesday night on Channel 4 at 8.00pm.
