From Zippos to Cirque du Soleil, don’t miss the best circus shows in the UK this year

Here's our handy guide to lots of events lined up for circus fans including traditional favourites and contemporary acts from around the world

ROLL UP, roll up, for World Circus Day!

Today we honour the jugglers, acrobats and clowns in big tops and rings everywhere — and there are lots of events lined up for circus fans.

 Zippos is a good place to start. A traditional touring company, they continually tweak the show so there is something new. This summer is Catitude, a troupe of feline acrobats from France. Yes, really.

At the other end of the circus scale, Closer By Circa perform at London’s Udderbelly Festival from this month. The Aussie acrobats put on a raw, modern show of pure athleticism. Tickets from £15 at .

Also in London, CircusFest is on at Camden’s Roundhouse until April 24, hosting a mix of contemporary acts from around the world. Expect slick, Cirque du Soleil-style fare with acts changing every few days. Tickets from £7.50 ().

For traditionalists, you can’t get more old-school than the Blackpool Tower Circus. They are the longest-running show in the UK, having performed every season at the Tower since 1894. The Endresz family have been in charge for the past 25 years and brothers Mooky and Mr Boo promise their bravest ever show. Family tickets from £65 ().

The best troupes are always reinventing themselves and none do it more often than Cirque du Soleil.

The Canadian spectacle is here in September, at the Trafford Centre in Manchester, then in London from January.
