Brits are also among the most restless as 66 per cent wake up regularly in the night.

The NHS says we need seven to nine hours every night, but most of us fall short.

Josh Piper, sleep expert for ResMed, which carried out the survey, said: “This is bad because sleep is a key pillar of our health.

“We live in a 24/7 society where we are expected to always be switched on but that is in stark contrast to what our bodies want.

“It has become trendy to trade sleep for work but actually we find people become less productive and have poor concentration when they are tired.”

Experts polled 36,000 people in 17 countries for the poll.

They found residents of Hong Kong sleep best, with 7.07 hours per night, ahead of India and Thailand.

Americans ranked just one spot above the UK, clocking 6.6 hours per night.
