Even untrained taste buds get a mood boost — and an expert reckons people can get a decent bottle for just £8 in the supermarket.

The researchers tracked the emotions of 50 people via heart rate monitors and questionnaires.

Those on a good wine had a marked surge of joy and serenity and a drop in fear and sadness, compared with cheap plonk.

The effect was enhanced if they also listened to jazz.

Study author Dr Lucia Billeci, of the National Research Council of Italy, in Pisa, said: “Wine undoubtedly generates a significant emotional response.

"This answer is attributable to the quality level of the wine.”

Wine ace Helena Nicklin said: “Given our high duty, if you’re paying under £6.50 then you’re not paying for the wine so that is really basic.

“The magic number is £8 — that’s when it starts tasting of what it’s meant to.”
