Brits are third biggest drinkers in the world missing out on top spot to unlikely nation

The UK were ahead of countries including Germany, Australia and Ireland

BRITS are among the world’s biggest binge drinkers, figures show.

We rank third out of 33 wealthy nations on rates of “heavy episodic drinking” — ahead of countries including Germany, Australia and Ireland.

Top of the binge list is Denmark, where 37 per cent admit to downing six or more drinks in one sitting each month.

Romania is next on 36 per cent, followed by Britain and Luxembourg on 35 per cent.

When it came to sexes, UK women tied for the top spot with Denmark — but men drank more than women in every nation.

Britain’s booze culture — summed up by singer Liam Gallagher clutching bottle of bubbly on a night out in London — was slammed in a report by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

It said alcohol consumption is a “major risk factor” for health — while the NHS says people should not regularly drink more than 14 units in a week, equal to around six beers or glasses of wine.

The UK ranked 17th out of 48 on the total amount of alcohol consumed yearly.

Our tobacco smoking of 13 per cent ranks 35th. But almost five per cent now vape, ranking us fifth out of 34.

We were also fifth in the list of fattest nations, with 36 per cent describing themselves as overweight or obese.

An OECD spokesman warned: “Smoking, harmful alcohol use, physical inactivity and obesity are the root cause of many conditions.”
