Heart attack patients more likely to survive if they live in London

HEART attack patients’ chances of survival are down to a postcode lottery, a report found.

Those living in London and the South East are most likely to survive.

Those areas are said to have the best NHS heart doctors — while care in the regions is worse.

Hundreds of lives would be saved annually if all areas had the same care, said the Institute for Fiscal Studies.

UK hospitals deal with 100,000 heart attack patients a year — one every five minutes.

Seven out of ten survive.

But report author George Stoye said: “Cardiologists of equal skill are not evenly spread.”

Doctors were better at saving patients in richer towns and cities, compared with rural areas.
