I’m a sexpert – here’s why you should NEVER use sex toys two days in a row (even if you clean them)

A SEX expert has revealed you should never use sex toys again within 24 hours - even if you've cleaned them.

After getting down and dirty, any toys you will have used will obviously have also got dirty.

It's vital that you clean them to prevent exposing yourself to any dangerous bugs next time the toys make an appearance.

But an expert has explained that sometimes, even despite a good scrub, some germs will remain for around 24 hours.

Pippy Murphy, the sex and relationship guru at , said: "Some studies show that even if a sex toy is washed, some viruses can remain on them for up to 24 hours after cleaning.

"With this in mind, please exercise caution when using a toy and not use it for 24 hours after it was last cleaned."

Dr Deborah Lee added: “Good hygiene is paramount in terms of putting objects inside the vagina or the rectum.

"Bacteria such as salmonella, shigella, E. Coli, and campylobacter can all be spread via the use of sex toys, as can hepatitis A, B and C, chlamydia, and gonorrhoea.

"If you don’t follow advice, you risk traumatising the genital area, damaging your genital tissues, or developing an infection or an allergic reaction.”

Pippy has compiled some tips to remember when taking care of your toys, which will then keep you safe...

You should clean your toys after every use.

Whilst this may sound laborious, it makes sense as every time you use it, you’re risking getting bacteria on it which you don’t want anywhere near your genitals.

A simple soap and water combination can clean most sex toys.

However, luckily, most sex toys made of silicone, glass, metal, or PVC can all be cleaned with a simple, warm soapy water wash.

You should do this for at least 20 seconds – the same amount of time you should spend washing your hands.

Do, however, make sure to use a mild, unscented hand wash so that you don’t mess with your PH balance and cause an infection.

Use a dedicated toothbrush to get in the nooks and crannies.

If the toy has grooves or crevices that can trap debris, use a soft toothbrush you’ve dedicated to this purpose.

You should then use plain water to give it a final rinse.

NEVER put your sex toy in a dishwasher - anything with electrical components will be ruined, plus the dishwasher leaves a residue that is not meant to end up inside you.

Instead, you can boil any silicone, glass, or metal toys (without electrical parts) for 1-3 minutes.

Once you’ve cleaned your sex toy, place it on a clean paper towel and allow it to air dry.

This is the best way of preventing lint from getting stuck to the toy and causing potential infections, whilst also allowing the nooks and crannies to fully dry.
