The PM also praised The Sun’s Jabs Army volunteers, saying: “I want to thank the tens of thousands, including the volunteers, The Jabs Army recruited by The Sun, who’ve helped to administer more than 92million vaccines, saving countless lives.

“I owe my life to the NHS, as many do.

"The single best way every one of us can help to protect the NHS is to get vaccinated.”

At least one-fifth of adults under 40 are still not vaccinated.

Mr Johnson attended our awards - sponsored by the National Lottery - on Tuesday night despite losing his mother Charlotte, 79, the previous day.

Grabbing his arm, host Davina McCall told him: “Sorry to hear about your mum.”

The PM handed the Groundbreaking Pioneer award to the Oxford Covid-19 Vaccine team, hailing them as “fantastic scientists”.

The team were represented by Prof Andrew Pollard, Hannah Robinson, Dr Parvinder Aley, Prof Katie Ewer and Prof Teresa Lambe, OBE.

Accepting the award, Prof Lambe said: “Thank you to everybody in the audience, and at home, because all of you rolled up your sleeves and got a jab.

“Because of what you’ve done, we’re able to see our loved ones and get back to doing things that we love.

“And the vaccine has given us hope this pandemic will end soon.”
