Spooky Snacks

There’s nothing scarier than hungry kids on Halloween – here are some treats that will do the trick

In Association with Tesco

HALLOWEEN with children requires a lot of preparation.

There are faces to be painted, costumes to be sewed and mums everywhere need to supply a steady stream of holiday-themed sweets to be grabbed by tiny hands.

Don't be spooked.

There are some quick tricks to make great treats that you can put together in a couple of minutes.

Here are three to get you started...

1. SWEET TEETH

4

You’ll need: Red apples, smooth peanut butter and mini marshmallows

Cut an apple into slices
Smear the peanut butter between two apple slices
Add mini marshmallows

2. SWAMP IN A CUP

4

You’ll need: apple juice, plastic cups and jelly worms

Pour apple juice into a cup
Add the gummy worm

3. BROWNIE GRAVEYARD

4

You’ll need: chocolate cake/brownie in a tin, round biscuits, black icing and chocolate fingers

Using black icing, write RIP on each of the biscuits
Slot them into the chocolate cake
Break chocolate fingers in half and make a fence around the edge.

And, when the big day is gone and passed, why not put the entrails of your scary-faced pumpkin to good use?

That way you get more bang for your buck and you also eliminate food waste - it's a win-win!

4. PUMPKIN BISCUITS

4

You'll need: 350g of all-purpose flour, 1 tbsp. baking powder, 3 tbsp. of sugar, 110g of butter, 450ml of pumpkin (pureed) and seasoning (salt, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger) to taste

Stir together flour, baking powder, sugar and seasoning
Blend together with butter into coarse crumbs and then mix in the pumpkin
Roll out the dough to be approx. 1/2 inch thick and cut out biscuits
Place on a buttered cookie sheet and into a preheated oven at 200 °C for 15 to 20 minutes
