Here’s how you can save a spoiled bottle of wine using a single penny

FINDING out that a bottle of your favourite wine has gone off is always an unpleasant surprise.

But there is a way you can save your spoiled plonk… and it’ll only cost you a penny.

If a bottle of wine has gone off, you can revive it with a copper coin, according to the American Chemical Society.

Naturally you need to make sure the penny is thoroughly cleaned before you go around dropping it in your vino.

But once you’ve given it a good scrub, simply pop it the glass, stir it around for a little while, then take it out and… ta-da!

Your wine should taste just fine.

The reason why is all down to science.

In a  posted to the ACS Reactions channel, experts reveal how the copper in the coin reacts to thiol compounds (sulphur molecules) which are sometimes generated in the wine during the fermentation process.

If you pop a penny into your wine, the copper reacts with the thiol compounds to produce odourless copper sulphide crystals, getting rid of that manky scent and promoting a better taste.
