Waitrose has been called out over a ‘sexist’ SANDWICH… and forced to change its name
The smoked chicken roll, from Heston Blumenthal's popular line, has sparked outrage on social media
A SUPERMARKET has come under fire for its "sexist" labelling - but it has nothing to do with clothing ranges.
Waitrose has been slammed for its new sandwich, in Heston Blumental's popular range, which is called the Gentleman's Smoked Chicken Caesar Roll.
The chicken roll contains gentleman's relish, an anchovy-based sauce, which we presume is the reason for the name - but people are still outraged.
London's Night Czar Amy Lame brought the "sexist" sarnie's name to people's attention earlier this week.
She tweeted: "I never knew sandwiches were gender specific. I'm female but thankfully @waitrose let me purchase this anyway", on Tuesday.
Fellow Twitter user and PR consultant Nikki Alvey said she was "really disappointed by this new marketing", labelling it "everyday sexism".
Waitrose was quick to apologise to customers and has promised to change the name.
A spokesperson told : "It's never our intention to cause offence - we're not dictating who should eat this sandwich - we hope anyone who tries it will love the distinctive flavours.
"However we are planning to change the name of the sandwich soon."
But others couldn't understand what the fuss was about, especially because of female-focused names like Pink Lady apples, lady fingers and Mothercare.
One tweeted: "It's named after the condiment Gentleman's Relish! Which is on the sandwich.
"No need to scream sexism at this. What next demanding Manchester be named personchester?"
Another tweeted :"in 6months time it will be politically incorrect to refer to the sandwich as Ploughmans.. it must be called a Ploughperson".
The sarnie is described as "the ultimate Caesar salad go to.
"A parmesan ciabetta roll filled with pulled, smoked chicken breast, beechwood smoked bacon and Parmigiana Reggiano all topped with anchovy mayonnaise and Cos lettuce for crunch."
Sounds yummy to us - hopefully Britain's female population won't be too offended to buy it.
