Marks and Spencer’s cult cake Colin the Caterpillar is a DAD… and you can EAT his babies

NO birthday is complete without the appearance of Colin the Caterpillar (or his wife Connie) - and it looks like you should be making extra space for a few of their plus ones, too.

People have just realised that there are more than just the cakey couple in the Caterpillar clan - there are six 'kids', too.

Marks and Spencer have sold a six pack of mini-roll size 'mini Colins' since 2016, which is around the same time that their mum suddenly appeared on shelves.

For those who have ever heartlessly sliced Colin in two, you'll know his inner workings resemble a moist chocolate cream with thick buttercream icing, with his tube-like abdomen concealed beneath a thick layer of milk chocolate.

Connie is slightly different, with normal white cream and jam making up the contents of her inner sanctum.

But their littl'uns are definitely daddy's boys, with the same chocolatey insides and sprinkling of Smarties-type jewels on their backs.

There have been more than 7 MILLION Colin the Caterpillar cakes sold since 1990 - and considering some of his babies are sold as a £12 25 pack, there's every chance that soon he will be outnumbered by his own mini-mes.

Over the years Colin has also tried out several different looks - like any dad questioning his own mortality.

There's been a creepy vampire Colin at Halloween, dubbed Count Colin the Caterpillar - and similarly ghoulish versions of the babies, too.

At Christmas the mini Colins were at it again, this time donning Santa hats and switching their coloured back jewels for festive red and green ones.

Last year M&S released 'wedding day' inspired Colins and Connies, complete with veils and top hats.
