Lad proposes to his girlfriend in Greggs… but it’s more romantic than it sounds
SAUSAGE roll haven Greggs may not seem the most romantic place to get engaged, but it appears to have worked for one loved-up couple.
Graphic designer Joe Callingham, 25, decided the perfect time to pop the question to his girlfriend was after a slap-up meal of baked goods – and she said yes.
To celebrate Valentine’s Day, Greggs held romantic candlelit dinners in five locations around the country for the very first time.
Couples were treated to a four-course set menu made entirely of Greggs products given a Valentine’s twist, and Joe decided to make the most of the momentous occasion.
Joe opted for the Stockwell shop, which had particular importance to the couple, as Joe had met Pineapple Featonby, 24, (who recently legally changed her name) in that same spot last November.
Joe, from Hertfordshire, got in touch with Greggs and asked them if they could help in his plans to propose to Pineapple, and they certainly delivered the goods.
After their main course, dessert was presented to his girlfriend with the words ‘Will you marry me?’ iced on to the plate, and Joe got down on one knee and presented her with a ring.
She said yes, and they were whisked off in a Rolls Royce Phantom at the end of the night, which was organised by Greggs.
The moment was captured by a hidden camera that Greggs had helped to set up.
Joe said: “When I saw Greggs were holding a Valentine’s evening at the same shop where we first met there was no question that I had to book a table and propose.
“I got in touch with Greggs and they helped make everything happen from icing the dessert plate to playing our favourite song when it came out. It was just perfect.”
The couple are from Hemel Hempstead, and met when Joe recognised her from his home turf, while she was buying pineapple chunks.
They both got the train back to Hemel and chatted the entire way, but while he got her number he never asked for her name – Chelsea – so labelled her ‘Pineapple Girl’.
Three months later she legally changed her name to Pineapple, before he got down on one knee.
A spokesperson for Greggs said: “It’s not every day we get a proposal in one our shops, so when Joe got in touch to tell us their story and what he was planning we were delighted to play our part by helping him set up the big question and making sure they had a romantic evening.”
The Valentine’s dinners were held in shops in Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle and London.
Bookings were made via OpenTable, and sold out in under 20 minutes.
We previously tried out Greggs’ £15 four course Valentine’s Day meal for a first date – to see if love can blossom over a Sausage and Bean Melt.
If a sausage and bean melt doesn't tickle your pickle, you may be interested to hear that in January people were going mad about this Greggs full English breakfast bake.
Plus, earlier this month we brought you news that the Greggs Valentine’s Day meal sold out in 20 minutes – and customers were NOT happy.
