What are French crepes and how are they different to pancakes?

While American pancakes are thick and fluffy, French crepes are the opposite - and are even thinner than traditional English pancake.

Crepes are more akin to English pancakes that their American cousins.

The thin, silky pancakes are extremely fine, with their name derived from the Latin crispa, which means “curled.”

This is in relation to their edges which slightly curl up.

They can be served with a number of fillings, from single sugar to jam or tangerine.

For English style pancakes, there are numerous ways to make them – after all, the day originates from using up what's left in your cupboard.

Which is healthier - a crepe or a pancake?

Generally speaking, a single crepe has fewer calories than a single American style pancake - because they are much less dense.

However, how "healthy" they are depends on what toppings you eat them with (and how many you eat!)

The more sugary or high fat the toppings you add, the more calories you will consume.

In America they are typically served stacked high with a range of toppings from blueberries to maple syrup or sometimes bacon.

Meanwhile crepes  can be served with a number of fillings, sweet or savoury.

Popular choices range from single sugar to jam or tangerine.
