Fast-food workers reveal the foods you should NEVER order… and it’s bad news for ice cream fans
Fast-food workers on Reddit reveal the foods they never order and why, plus how much time it really takes to add pepperoni to your pizza
FAST food is everyone’s guilty pleasure, but let's face it - do we ever really know what goes into our food?
reveal the fast foods we should never order and why.
With the party season approaching, when most of us will be heading to our local greasy takeaway shop to mop up our alcohol, here's what really goes on behind closed doors.
Smoothies
Just because your order a fruity smoothie doesn't make it healthy.
According to one user, the smoothies where they worked were jam packed with ICE CREAM.
The wrote: "Omg. I worked for Jamba. ALL THEIR SMOOTHIES HAVE ICE CREAM IN THEM. JUST BECAUSE YOU ADD KALE DOES NOT MEAN ITS HEALTHY!"
Someone else agreed: "I never get why people think that things loaded with sugar are somehow healthy just because they put "healthy" ingredients in it."
Teriyaki chicken
Reddit users said because the chicken takes so long to cook, they only make enough based on how many customers they’re expecting that day. So your chicken could be really old.
Sushi
Sushi was also deemed a no-go by one worker.
They wrote: "If you can, never buy cheap sushi with raw fish in it. If it's inexpensive it's because they're cheaping out on the fish.
"Not only is it less delicious, but it's also less likely to have gone through the proper processes for parasite destruction.
"Plus if a SUSHI restaurant is willing to cheap out on the fish, then they're probably not a great restaurant in general.
"Edit: Source: I'm a health inspector and I regularly site restaurants for having unapproved fish without parasite destruction."
Mexican salad
Pizza chain employees reveal how much they hate being asked to make Mexican salads by diners. The salads may end up getting a mix of foods in them thanks to the different cuisines.
Pepperoni pizza
In the thread, a Reddit worker said they used to work at a pizza chain with managers who were extremely fussy about how much pepperoni goes on to each pizza.
The user went on to add that they measured each out with measuring cups and had to count each of the 35 pepperonis individually, using 80 for a family-size pizza.
Each pepperoni is individually hand counted meaning the grime and germs multiplies depending on the size you order.
Soda
One former fast food worker claimed that the soda machines were never properly cleaned.
: "One of my coworkers always got soda station cleanup as her side-work.
"Turns out she never actually cleaned the soda founatin or the nozzles.
"I literally pulled a chunk of mould from the machine".
Someone else agreed: "All those little spout pieces are popped off at the end of the night and tossed in a cup of soda water, and I’ve never seen one without at least some mold. Long story short- those fountains are nasty and never cleaned properly."
Another advised: "Run the soda fountain a second or two before pouring it into your cup."
‘Grilled’ chicken
One worker revealed grilled chicken is actually microwaved and then placed on a grill for the 'grill marks' and nobody wants to eat microwaved meat when they opted for fresh, grilled chicken.
Ice cream
McDonald's never seems to be able to serve McFlurrys in the summer, and users were all too quick to reveal that this isn't them being lazy - they really don't work.
Some added that if they want some 'liquid sugar milk', McFlurrys are the thing to order.
Unless you want some sugary milk for dessert, don't opt for McFlurrys.
And it seems that other machine ice creams may also be a no-go.
Another user that there was often 'green fungus' in ice cream machines because they only got cleaned every few months.
Banana ice cream also came under fire - when it is ordered from a store, workers admit they can never get the ice cream to be a good texture. One worker said it's impossible for banana ice cream not to be runny.
Starbucks' frappucinos
Starbucks is better known for its poorly spelt names and Instagrammable drinks, but behind the pictures, the baristas admit to how much they actually hate making the famous frappucinos.
One said: "Most of them just seem like they're made to be Instagram-ready. I frequently find ones that have barely been touched in the bin".
They also added that after customers take a sip, they ask for something else to be made instead.
Subway
Meat in a sub without being toasted sounds like a worker's worst nightmare come true, as they have to deal with hot meat.
They admit that they have to separate the bread and the meat, and then go through the mess of having to assemble the sandwich - all of this is then done by hand.
