10 of the weirdest McDonald’s locations around the world – from a converted plane to a ‘UFO’ in Roswell
There are more than 30,000 Maccies in the world - but they don't all look the same
THERE are more than 30,000 McDonald's restaurants in the world, and they're instantly recognisable by the famous golden arches.
But some of the fast food chain's buildings are more eye-catching than others. Here are 10 of the weirdest...
1) Air-mazing
Forget the drive thru - in Taupo, New Zealand, there's a 'fly thru' Maccies inside a decommissioned plane.
The grounded DC-3 was converted into a 20-seat diner in 2014, and painted in the fast food giant's signature red colour.
The disused aircraft had sat next to the already-established Maccies branch for 24 years, before the franchise owners decided to extend their seating by converting the plane.
2) Out of this world
The small town of Roswell, USA, was made famous after a "UFO sighting" in 1947.
This New Mexico chain is cashing in on the alien loving tourists who visit the town every year.
The restaurant is in the shape of a spaceship but there haven't been any aliens spotted eating there - yet.
3) Off the rails
Located on one of America's most iconic roads, Route 66, this restaurant certainly stands out from the crowd.
The branch, in Barstow, California, is made from renovated train carriages.
4) Snow joke
The snow resort of Lindavallen, Sweden, is home to the world's first ski thru restaurant.
If you're enough of a pro to ski and eat simultaneously, you can skate off and enjoy your Big Mac on the go.
The restaurant is called McSki, for obvious reasons.
5) In the money
This beautiful building in Kristiansand, Norway, used to be a bank - but now only small change passes hands, as it's become a Maccies.
The impressive pillars draw in hungry passers-by.
The original main doors are still in tact - but customers have to use the side entrance these days.
6) On the market
This grand Tudor-style building in Bray, Ireland, was used as a market house until the 1940s.
Maccies took over the ground floor in 1997 and, bizarrely, the upstairs is still used as the chambers for Bray Town Council.
7) Bright lights
This art deco McDonald's in Melbourne, Australia, looks like fairly normal during the day.
But at night the building, which used to be the United Kingdom Hotel, is hard to miss - thanks to its impressive neon lights.
8) Make a house a home
This restaurant in Maine, USA, is a very classy affair.
It used to be a ship captain's mansion, and the cosy dining room has a huge fireplace.
9) Eat your greens
Strict local laws mean this Arizonian chain in Sedona, USA, needs to blend into its surrounding red rocks.
But, in some ways, the orange brick walls and green M make the building much more eye-catching.
10) A very Happy Meal
This chain in Dallas, Texas, is built in the shape of a McDonald's Happy Meal box.
Its colourful artwork means the building is sure to attract attention from passing drivers.
