DENISE Van Outen has shared a secret code that all supermarket shoppers should be looking out for on their next visit.
The TV presenter recently fronted Channel 4 documentary Secrets of the Supermarket Own Brands, in which she lifted the lid on how people could save money during their weekly food shop.
And in a resurfaced clip of her chatting about the show on ITV’s Good Morning Britain, Denise, 49, revealed some of the best things she’d learnt along the way.
And one of her top tips was to start looking at packaging more closely, as it can reveal so much about what you’re really buying – and perhaps paying too much for.
She explained: “When we’re young, we recognise certain brands and they’re your go-to when you go shopping in a supermarket.
“I mean, I’m guilty of it, and you think, ‘Oh I don’t want to switch’.”

But Denise then continued to tell hosts Ben Shephard and Charlotte Hawkins that when making the show, she’d had her eyes opened.
That’s because she’d been enlightened to the fact that a lot of the supermarket’s own brand items are actually almost identical to the more expensive brands we’ve come to know and love.
The mum-of-one revealed: “But, actually, it’s so interesting because when you look at the packaging, you can see they’re made in the same factories.”
And this is where the little-known code comes in very handy.

The Celebrity Gogglebox star went on to say: “For instance, especially with dairy products, they have a code on the back.
“And the code is the same with the known brands and the own brands, which means it’s practically identical.
“What they’ll do is maybe they’ll tweak the ingredients just slightly, but then they’re putting the price up on the known brands and the supermarket own brands are a lot cheaper.
“And the quality is really, really good.”
After Denise encouraged others to make sure they checked packaging very carefully – particularly in the cost of living crisis – Good Morning Britain was inundated with comments.
One person agreed, as they said: “No different, but the price!”
A second added: “It costs less but it tastes the same.”
Meanwhile, a third pointed out that it doesn’t just stop with food.

In an additional tip, they said: “Same with medicine – look at the codes on the back.”
