But until then, we have to make do with our own takes on our favourite fast food.
Fortunately, one savvy mum has shared her foolproof recipe for crispy KFC chicken - and her kids even think it's BETTER than the real thing.
Posting photos of her "fakeaway" the Facebook group , the mum revealed how she started by soaking the chicken in buttermilk overnight.
But if you can't get find it in your local supermarket, suggests mixing 250ml of milk with a tablespoon of lemon juice and allowing it to sit for five minutes beforehand.
How to make KFC chicken at home
Ingredients:
- six chicken breasts
- three tablespoons white pepper
- one tablespoon mustard powder
- one tablespoon ground ginger
- one tablespoon celery salt
- one teaspoon oregano
- one and a half teaspoons of basil
- one and a half teaspoons of thyme
- two tablespoons garlic salt
- two tablespoons onion salt
- four tablespoons of paprika
- two cups of plain flour
- milk and lemon juice for buttermilk
Method:
- Soak the chicken in buttermilk overnight
- Mix all the dry ingredients together in a bowl and coat chicken
- Dry fry in frying pan with vegetable oil and put in oven on low heat for 10 minutes
Although it's tempting to skip this step, the acidity of the lemon juice makes the meat more tender while the milk is essential when you're coating it in the seasoning.
Following a recipe she'd seen posted in the group, the mum then compiled her dry ingredients in a bowl the following day.
She then coated the chicken in the mixture before deep frying it for 10 minutes until the chicken "started floating" - alternatively, you could cook the chicken in a frying pan with a generous amount of vegetable oil.
And just to make it extra crispy, she finished off by putting it in the oven for another 10 minutes.
Proudly posting photos of her KFC-inspired chicken, the mum wrote: "Kids said it was better than the real deal!"
What's more, other fast food fans have also been inspired to give this recipe a go after realising how simple it is.
One replied: "Looks amazing, well done!"
Another added: "I can't believe how close it is to the original!"
A third wrote: "I did this today but boiled the chicken first as i saw in another recipe. Worked out great."
