COLIN COPYCAT

From Co-op’s Charlie to Tesco’s Curly, we review rivals to Marks & Spencer’s Colin the Caterpillar cake

FANCY a cheaper version of Marks & Spencer’s Colin the Caterpillar cake? Then you better leg it down to one of its supermarket rivals.

The £7.50 kids’ chocolate treat has spawned a range of imitators since it was launched in 1990. But can they match the original?

Katy Docherty put the caterpillars to the test…

Katy Docherty tried Colin’s copycats and gives her verdict on taste, looks and value for money for each of them.

Morrisons

Oliver Dixon - The Sun
Morrisons’ Morris is a decent size and shows that you can get a decent cake for a lower price

NAME: Morris
COST: £6
SERVES: 12
TASTE: Delicious
LOOKS: Bless him with his little blue bow tie. His plain box could be a bit more imaginative, though.
VALUE: A decent size. It shows that you can get a decent cake for a lower price.

Co-op

Oliver Dixon - The Sun
Co-op’s Charlie is not the cheapest and not the tastiest, either

NAME: Charlie
COST: £6.35
SERVES: 12
TASTE: The face is far too sugary and the chocolate actually tastes a little cheap.
LOOKS: His face is slightly wonky and his feet look stuck on.
VALUE: Not the cheapest and not the tastiest, either.

Waitrose

Cecil is on the pricier end of the scale

NAME: Cecil
COST: £7
SERVES: 12
TASTE: Rich chocolate and an extra-gooey centre.
LOOKS: Great presentation in the box and boasts a “hand-finished” design. But is he too smooth to be a caterpillar?
VALUE: Cecil is on the pricier end of the scale, but the cake is delicious enough to warrant it.

Asda

Oliver Dixon - The Sun
Clyde doesn’t taste as good as Colin

NAME: Clyde
COST: £6.25
SERVES: 12
TASTE: A little bit bland. The green face is off-putting and it tasted like cardboard.
LOOKS: Is Clyde OK? He looks like he has seen some traumatising stuff.
VALUE: What Clyde lacks in looks, he also lacks in flavour.

Sainsbury’s

Oliver Dixon - The Sun
Wiggles’ box has a really cute design and he looks fab too

NAME: Wiggles
COST: £6
SERVES: 12
TASTE: Sweet and acceptable, but certainly wouldn’t have you queuing for thirds.
LOOKS: His box has a really cute design and he looks fab too.
VALUE: For his size, 12 servings may be optimistic.

Tesco

Curly is one of the cheapest of the bunch, so you can’t be too picky about its appearance

NAME: Curly
COST: £6
SERVES: 12
TASTE: Surprisingly delicious. Rich chocolate and soft sponge.
LOOKS: Not the cutest of faces, but overall bearable.
VALUE: One of the cheapest of the bunch, so you can’t be too picky about its appearance.

Colin in the priciest of the caterpillar cakes, but the ten servings are generous ones

NAME: Colin
COST: £7.50
SERVES: 10
TASTE: Colin is the original and his thick chocolate coating is a popular favourite.
LOOKS: A fine-looking fellow. Shame his cheeky face is hidden by the box.
VALUE: The priciest cake but the ten servings are generous ones.
