Princess Eugenie’s engagement ring is ‘more impressive’ than Kate Middleton’s due to its extremely rare pink stone, jewellery experts claim
KATE Middleton’s sapphire engagement is one of the most recognisable in the world.
But it turns out that Princess Eugenie’s ring – which is also a sapphire – is actually more rare and impressive to jewellery experts.
Eugenie’s ring features a coral-coloured padparadscha sapphire, surrounded by diamonds.
The sapphire, known as “lotus blossom” is one of the rarest in the world, and experts have valued it at around £7,000.
Princess Eugenie’s partner Jack Brooksbank designed the ring himself, and based it on the ring Prince Andrew gave Sarah Ferguson in March 1986, which featured a ruby surrounded by a halo of 10 diamonds.
Meanwhile, Kate’s ring is a stunning blue jewel surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds, while the setting consists of 18-carat white gold.
Sophie Lomax, head of design at 77diamonds.com, told the : “Princess Eugenie’s ring features an oval cut padparadscha sapphire encircled with a cluster of pear-shaped diamonds.
“Padparadscha sapphires are typically found in Sri Lanka and are one of the rarest colour of sapphire, being a beautiful and unique mix of pink and orange.”
While Kate’s blue sapphire is not technically as rare, its sweet history makes it extremely special and it certainly looks beautiful.
It is estimated to be worth staggering £300,000 and poignantly belonged to Prince William’s late mum, Princess Diana.
Prince William proposed to Kate with the statement piece back in 2010, after a selfless Prince Harry generously gave it to him after inheriting it.
Prince Harry later proposed to Meghan Markle in 2017 using a stone from Botswana and two diamonds from Princess Diana’s collection.
The future heir popped the question in Kenya, and chose the ring as a way of “making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today and the excitement”.
The royal couple tied the knot in Westminster Abbey in April 2011, and now have children together; Prince George, six, Princess Charlotte, four, and one-year-old Prince Louis.
It was announced that Jack and Princess Eugenie were engaged in January 2018, and they got married in Windsor in October that year.
Meghan Markle was banned from wearing an engagement ring on the Suits set because of Prince Harry wedding rumours, former co-star reveals.
