The Queen was once overheard arguing with her ‘mummy’ over her extravagant spending habits, royal aide reveals
THE QUEEN had a few run-ins with her “mummy” over her extravagant spending habits, a royal aide has revealed.
Arguments would arise about the Queen Mother’s enormous bills, which would have to be signed off by the Queen.
According to a Daily Mail report the monarch’s racing manager Henry Hubert once said: ““If there had been two of them who spent money as she [the Queen Mother] does, there’d be nothing left in the coffers now.”
At one point, after her mum had purchased more racehorses, the Queen had simply sent her a note that said “Oh dear, Mummy!” the reports.
And one particular argument was overheard during the Queen’s visit to a West End opening back in 2002 where she apparently quarrelled with her mum on the phone.
A source told The Guardian at the time that the Queen Mother had asked her daughter “who do you think you are”.
To which she replied: “The Queen, mummy, the Queen.”
And this is not the only royal run in that the Queen Mother had.
A documentary previously claimed that she did not get along with Prince Philip.
Born in 1900 as Elizabeth Bowes-Lyons, she married George VI in 1923, and died aged 101 in 2002.
The Channel 5 documentary claims the mother of Princesses Margaret and Elizabeth didn’t see eye to eye with her son-in-law Prince Phillip, now 97.
The documentary suggests they "never really got on", and clashed on a number of issues.
The pair are said to have argued over his installation of telephones at Buckingham Palace, and his removal of the footmen who used to carry messages between the royals.
The Queen Mother’s dislike of Prince Phillip has been discussed before, with Netflix's The Royal House of Windsor also referencing their rocky relationship.
The show said: “The Queen Mother was wary of Prince Philip.
“She thought he bullied his son [Charles] and failed to appreciate how sensitive he was.”
A powerful force in the royal family, she is also said to have had an influence on her brother-in-law’s, King Edward VIII, relationship with Wallis Simpson.
As Queen Consort, it’s rumoured that she used her clout to deny the divorced American the title Her Royal Highness.
