The Queen and Prince Philip sleep in separate beds because of bizarre upper class tradition (and they avoid each others’ snoring), royal biographer claims

OVER the last few years, reports have emerged that the Queen and Prince Philip not only "sleep in separate beds" but they also "have separate bedrooms", too.

And apparently, the reason why is all to do with an upper class tradition originating in the UK.

According to Lady Pamela Hicks - Philip's cousin - the upper class "always have separate bedrooms".

Lady Pam made the claim while speaking to Sally Bedell Smith for her biography of the monarch in 2012.

"In England, the upper class always have had separate bedrooms," she explained.

"Then when you are feeling cosy you share your room sometimes. It is lovely to be able to choose."

And it's not just Lady Pam who thinks so, with Miami-based entrepreneur Eric Borukhin revealing to that it's "a luxury".

“It’s a matter of convenience, if you can afford it,” he said, referring to his and his wife Mira's separate bedrooms.

“If you can have that extra room, it’s basically a luxury.”

Speaking about their social circle, he adds: "Everybody accepts it as a normal thing."

Earlier this year, reports emerged that Prince Philip was "leading a separate life" to Her Majesty.

report that the 98-year-old now spends most of his time in Windsor or Wood Farm - a modest cottage on the Sandringham estate.

A courtier told the publication: "The Queen feels the Duke has earned a proper retirement. She knows him too well — if he was still at the centre of royal life he'd feel he had to be involved.

"Being at Wood Farm means that he's not too far away, but far enough to be able to relax."

The Queen is currently at Balmoral, her home in the Scottish highlands where she is enjoying some time away from the spotlight.

The Scottish castle has been in the Royal Family since 1852 and with 52 bedrooms, there's certainly more than enough room for Her Maj and Philip to have their own space.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that one in four British couples regularly sleep in separate beds.

However, a survey suggested that doing so can boost couples’ sex lives. More than a third who kipped apart saw more action than when they shared a bed.
