Mum-of-six can’t afford to feed her kids because of expensive school uniforms
A MUM has revealed how she is struggling to feed her six children because of expensive school uniforms.
Chloe Adomaitis, 27, has explained how she has had to cut back on her food shop in order to spend £200 on the required clothes.
Speaking to , the parent revealed how she was likely to have to have to forgo other essentials in order to afford more pricey uniform as four of her children move to secondary school in the next two years.
“It affects everything, holidays, buying healthy food. It is so expensive but I do the best I can for my kids,” said the mum-of-six, who lives in Grimsby in Lincolnshire.
Chloe revealed her fears that as her children left primary school it would “break the bank”.
“When you have to buy the ones that are labelled when they get to secondary school and they have to be exactly right, you can’t have certain shoes and the blazers run out so quickly, that’s tough,” she explained.
“One might break a pair of shoes or another might come in with felt tip on one shirt and the next day their shirt is dirty.”
Chloe added: “You’re looking at least £200-£300 worth of school gear and that’s one or two pairs each. You have to plan it out and make sure you don’t spend it all in one go.”
This has meant cutting back on meat and fruit during the food shop.
She revealed that the family have also never had a holiday abroad.
Chloe’s story comes as it was revealed in a national study by the Department for Education that parents are having to spend £230 on uniform per child.
This often excludes branded PE kit, which can add £70 to the bill for primary school kids and £140 if they’re at secondary school.
Many on the latter require pricey uniform that can only be purchased through specialist providers and not cheaper supermarket chains.
Some parents may be eligible to apply for a £150 School Uniform Grant from the government.
