WHEN Princess Diana married Prince Charles in 1981, their wedding looked like something straight out of a fairytale.

However, the couple's road to the altar didn't exactly get off to the strongest start as a royal expert has claimed that Diana LAUGHED at Prince Charles' proposal.

Appearing on the Channel 5 documentary Charles and Di: The Truth Behind Their Wedding, Majesty magazine editor Ingrid Seward claims the heir to the throne proposed in the nursery at Windsor Castle "because the nursery is like a home."

Describing Diana's response, the expert said: "She burst out laughing. I think that was probably just her nerves.

"She didn't think it was the most romantic of proposals but she had the proposal."

Diana revealed in an interview Andrew Morton that Prince Charles asked her if she realised that "one day you'll be Queen" to which she replied "I love you so much".

In the biography Diana: Her True Story, the Princess reflected: "A voice said to me inside, 'You won't be queen but you will have a tough role...

"'Yes,' I said. 'I love you so much, I love you so much.' He said, 'Whatever love means' and so he ran upstairs and rang his mother."

Also appearing on the documentary, royal author Christopher Wilson claimed Diana "didn't see the proposal coming" and was "completely bowled over".

He said: "Prince Charles didn't pick her up in his arms and embrace or do any of the things we might do when we propose marriage to the one that we love.

"He rang his mum, simply to say 'there, I've done it now. You've asked me to get married to somebody and I've fixed it.'

"What he'd done was he'd finally found a wife."

In 1985, royal expert and magazine editor Tina Brown wrote in Vanity Fair that Camilla Parker-Bowles actually encouraged Charles to ask Diana to marry him.

She wrote: "His family wanted it. The public wanted it.

"Like the last Prince of Wales, he liked to confide in married women, and his two favourites Lady Tryon and Camilla Parker Bowles wanted it.

"They had met the blushing little Spencer girl and deduced she was not going to give them any trouble."

In the documentary - which examines the week leading up to the Royal Wedding - Ingrid added: "Prince Charles kept saying, 'I want to do the right thing by my country and my family'.

"But deep down he knew they had nothing in common."

What's more, Princess Diana also admitted that she'd had a "terrible row" with Charles about his stag do just days before their wedding.

In more Royal Family news, animal-lover Meghan Markle "won't be grouse hunting at Balmoral as it's been cancelled for the year due to a fall in numbers".

And The Queen's VERY cheeky sense of humour has been revealed after she corrected a French royal's "penis" comment.

Plus Meghan Markle will be separated from Prince Harry and the Royal Family at Madame Tussauds to reflect the Duchess' "celebrity status".
