Mother-in-law refuses to spell her granddaughter’s name correctly because she ‘doesn’t like it’

A MUM has taken to a parenting forum begging for help after reaching breaking point with her mother-in-law.

The desperate parent explained her husband's mum has been spelling her daughter's name incorrectly for almost four years, after expressing how much she disliked the spelling they had chosen.

"Dear daughter is three nearly four, we called [her] a name with more than one correct spelling [and] mother-in-law made it clear from the beginning she didn't like the spelling we used and thinks it's wrong," the mum explained on .

"Every time we see her, she brings it up, time after time after time. Eventually I told dear husband, it's his mother, me trying to explain to her clearly isn't working, he needs to grow a backbone and tell her to stop mentioning it.

"He had a chat with her but doesn't seem to have achieved anything. If anything, since then it's been worse.

"Mother-in-law's latest trick is to give dear daughter loads of presents (stuff we don't need, stuff we've already told her that we've bought, she goes and buys the expensive version and then tells us we can take our one back now) and addresses it all to dear daughter (her spelling)."

The mum went on to explain she had seen her mother-in-law the week before and had asked her not to post any images of her little girl on Facebook.

"Well, on Sunday evening, I check Facebook to find MIL has posted a load of pictures, with a caption about how much she loves her granddaughter (her spelling again!)

"This is starting to get on my nerves now, there's nothing else we can do is there?"

Other users were outraged at the mother-in-law, with one suggesting the mum "start spelling her name wrong".

"Start spelling her name wrong?"; They suggested.

"Or just using the wrong name, e.g. 'Happy Birthday Sandra!' when her name is Sara.

"And just reply 'Well, I like that name better...' when she complains."

Another wrote: "There are so many issues here. She wont accept the correct spelling of your daughter's name, she's crossing boundaries with the presents and now social media.

"I'm sure another poster will be along with some inspired way of dealing with these issues effectively.

"But I'd just have it out with her, personally. She obviously doesn't care about what your DH says, so bring out the big guns."

Others said it was disrespectful while several suggested "publicly correcting" her.

One user had experienced a similar issue first-hand, explaining: "I have a name for which there is only one correct spelling but a similar name exists that ends in an a rather than an e.

"One of my aunts preferred the a version because she thought it sounded classier so would always send cards and presents and address me by that name.

"Didn't matter how many times I corrected her.

"She knew my name just chose to ignore it and use the other version.

"If social media had existed in those days I would definitely have had something to say on there to her!"
