Mum rages after her mother-in-law writes her a ‘patronising’ list of what to pack for her children on holiday
A MUM is fuming after her mother-in-law gave her a "patronising" list of what to pack for her children on holiday - including pants and socks.
The mum was horrified when her two daughters returned from their gran’s house with a list of what to bring for their upcoming holiday.
The matriarch decided she needed to remind the mum to bring the basics for her kids, including seven pairs of pants, pyjamas, socks and trainers.
The mum-of-two explained they were planning a family trip – including the in-laws – for a week.
The mum wrote on : “We’re going away with our in laws for 7 nights next week.
“They are taking the kids there first (UK break) and we're meeting them there 2 days later due to work commitments.”
After she and her husband arrive, they’ll be doing all the childcare.
The setup sounds like a fairly normal family break, so the mum was puzzled to receive a packing list from her mother-in-law for the whole trip.
She added: “I'm trying not to go mad I appreciate it's nothing major, but it feels so patronising, like we can’t take care of our 2 dds [darling daughters].
“I warned dh [dear husband] before we booked that I wasn't keen on going because I find his mum very set in her ways and can be overbearing.
Mother-in-law's packing list
- Waterproof coat
- Fleece
- 7 pairs of pants
- 1 smart dress for lunch
- 7 tops
- Trousers and shorts
- Swim costume
- Trainers
- Smartish shoes for dress
- Cardigan
- Pyjamas
- 7 socks
“He promised it would be fine... not even day 1.”
And making sure the girls themselves hadn’t written out the list, the mum added: “I'd like to think I've packed successfully for past 10 years.
“I said oh, have you and granny made a list together for the holiday?
“She said no mum, granny did that herself.”
Her post has racked up hundreds of comments, with people agreeing the gran’s behaviour is "patronising".
Suggesting how she could handle it, one person suggested she reply: “Thanks for the list MIL, I wasn’t planning to bring any clothes or underwear for the kids, so thank god you reminded me."
Someone else thought: “Text her and say 'thanks for the list, but DH [dear husband] says he is old enough to pack for himself now.”
A third said: “It’s a bit patronising really. You know what to pack your kids when they go away.”
This person wrote: “Clearly, your mother-in-law thinks you’re am imbecile. If I were you, I would be very much regretting agreeing to this holiday.”
And while another user agreed that the list “would wind them up”, others suggested she confront her mother-in-law about it.
