WOMEN are going to extreme lengths to hide their grey hair including wearing wigs and refusing to leave the house, a study has revealed.

With one in five Brits finding their first grey in their mid-twenties, women are coming up with creative solutions to avoid being seen with them.

The study of 2,000 adults, by Pantene, found some women also resort to plucking them out, while others wear a flamboyant outfits to distract from their greys.

Some four in ten women dye their hair to cover their greys, while some use mascara for a quick fix.

And in extreme cases, women have admitted they’ve shaved off their hair.

A spokesman for Pantene said: “It’s completely normal to feel a bit surprised by finding your first grey hair – although it’s something almost everyone will experience at some point in their life.

“Historically, greys have been seen as a sign of ageing and can be perceived negatively but we believe grey hair should be celebrated.

“Despite stereotypical attitudes towards grey hair, our study found people are more receptive to going grey than ever before, so it’s important those who make this choice feel confident and empowered to do so.”

The study also found that the majority of women have found a grey strand by age 37, claiming it makes them feel “frumpy”, with four in ten covering them up to feel more confident.

Despite more than half of Brits claiming they would “go grey gracefully”, the age they thought it’s socially “acceptable” to be grey for women is in their mid-50s, while for men it’s their mid-40s.

The study, conducted by OnePoll, also found that after embracing their natural shade, women felt more empowered and confident, adding it can end up being a style statement rather than a sign of age.
