Meghan Markle chose ‘one of her university sorority sisters’ as godmother, says royal expert
THE identities of Archie’s godparents have been kept under wraps by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.
But a royal expert has revealed that a godmother chosen for the two-month-old is “certainly” one of the Duchess of Sussex’s university sorority sisters.
Ahead of her baby son’s christening last Saturday, the new royal mum, 37, took her American friends Lindsay Roth and Genevieve Hillis to watch Serena Williams play at Wimbledon.
The trio met at the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Northwestern University in Illinois.
Now, royal correspondent Omid Scobie has indicated on that one of the women has been made a godparent.
“They’re really including friends from the past,” he explained.
“With Meghan, she had her friends Lindsay Roth and Genevieve Hillis at the christening.
“They’re all sorority sisters from Northwestern University and have stayed tight-knit.
“And one of those is certainly one of the godparents.”
The Duke, 34, and Duchess announced ahead of their two-month-old son’s baptism at the weekend that his godparents would remain a secret.
A royal source told : “These are friends, private citizens, not celebrities or public figures.”
Scobie has suggested the request for privacy came from the godparents themselves – and not the royal couple, who have been heavily-criticised for the move.
“Because from the outside it looks like Harry and Meghan didn’t want to share that information with the world,” he continued on the The Royal Box.
“But actually the real story is that some of the godparents themselves didn’t want their names out there.”
When presenter Kate Thornton said that tennis star Serena had been ruled out of the list of possible godparents because she was at Wimbledon on the day of the christening, Scobie disagreed.
“I actually looked into the rules here,” he revealed.
“Can you be a godparent and not attend the christening.
“And as long as someone attended on her behalf, she could be a godparent. I wouldn’t rule her out altogether.”
Last week, The Sunday Times revealed that Charlie van Straubenzee has been made one of Archie’s godfathers.
