The ‘shelf butt’ is the rear-ly bizarre bum shape Chloe Ferry, Carol Vorderman and Khloe Kardashian are rocking
LONG gone are the days when an hour-glass figure was what women aspired to with ‘slim thick’ and the ‘wisdom tooth’ physique touted as trendy body types.
And now the ‘shelf butt’ is the latest bum shape that celebs are aiming for with stars like Chloe Ferry, Khloe Kardashian and Carol Vorderman flaunting their curvaceous posteriors.
Characterised by a large voluptuous rear that is out of proportion with the rest of the body, the ‘shelf butt’ earns its name because of the shelf-like quality the bum provides.
Urban Dictionary defines it as “a large butt on an otherwise not large woman. So oddly large that it protrudes like a shelf.”
Very few women are naturally gifted with such a pert derriere and there’s a fair chance that these stars relied on tailored workouts to get the figure they were after.
The muscles in your bottom include the largest in the body the gluteus maximus which is what these celebs have been working on to achieve their curvy posterior.
Exercises recommended for working this muscle include hiking, stair-climbing, cycling and step aerobics.
Elliott Upton of Ultimate Performance Fitness shared his tips on achieving the perfect ‘shelf butt.’
Speaking to Fabulous Digital Elliott said: “The butt is made of three major muscles, glute maximus which makes up the main shape of your butt, glute medius which is the top-lateral side of your butt and glute minimum which is right underneath your maximus and makes up the rest of the butt.
“To earn yourself a ‘shelf butt’, you need to focus on the glute maximus which is a prime driver and the glute medius.
“To work the glute maximus, movements like goblet squats, dumbbell squats, lunges or Romanian deadlifts as well as hip extension movements are the most effective.
“In regard to the glute medius, the movements to focus on are abduction lateral rotations, so ensure you take your legs out and rotate them to the side for maximum impact.

“Properly train these muscles by using a range of reps, anywhere between six and 20 and a range of training methods, paying close attention to things like activators which are strong squeeze movements such as deadlifts, stretch movements like Romanian deadlifts which stretch the glutes and pump movements like frog pumps and band walks.
“A combination of these movements, as well as eating plenty of protein, keeping the hips mobile and training two to three times a week will help you get well on your way to building the perfect shelf butt.”
