A ROYALIST claims that the royal family have “shot themselves in the foot” after spending £2.4 million of tax payers money on the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s  Windsor home has been decked out with “two orangeries and a floating floor” all of which was paid for with taxpayers money.

Less than impressed with the couple’s spending one self-confessed royal fan asked whether he might be able to tour the house, having paid for it.

Appearing on BBC’s Question Time on Thursday, the man named Stephen from Halifax West Yorkshire put his point forward.

Speaking to host Fiona Bruce he said: “Will I be able to visit and to walk around Frogmore cottage to check my investment as a fully paid up tax payer?”

His question was put to panellist and managing director of Iceland Richard Walker who spoke in defence of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

He said: “Stephen mentioned the right word, investment,  and what an incredible investment the royals are, they’re an essential part of brand Britain.

“It’s amazing value for money. I was in America recently and the front page of every single magazine has got the royals on it, they’re amazing.

“As we make our way in the world at the time of Brexit we need brand Britain to be promoted.”

However, Stephen remained unconvinced.

He responded: “I’m a royalist I’m not a republican, but I think the royal family here have just shot themselves in the foot when we’ve got all these cuts.

“And the kids of Princess Diana have been quit e grounded in how they’ve been brought up. They’ve been to me, as a working class guy, quite normal compared to the rest (of the royals).”

Asked if he thought they had spent too much Stephen added:  “Oh god absolutely, when they’ve got other properties to live in, it’s not as if they’ve been poverty stricken.”

Harry, 34, and Meghan, 37, moved into their new home in April, a month before baby Archie Harrison was born.

When the Sun last year revealed their planned relocation, officials tried to downplay the cost, saying it would be closer to £1.5million.

But accounts revealed the refurbishment of the property near Windsor Castle cost £2.4million  in the financial year to April alone.

Any work carried out since then has not been included, and the exterior has yet to be repainted — so the true cost is expected to be closer to £3million.

The books revealed major work was undertaken to turn five properties back to a single home.

A luxury kitchen was installed, while an existing studio with a bedroom was renovated, and fireplaces, floors and staircases replaced.

Meghan chose eco-friendly, toxin-free and vegan paint for the redecoration, which was reportedly overseen by designer Vicky Charles.

She was responsible for the interiors of Soho Farmhouse in Oxfordshire, a hotel and members’ club popular with celebs.
