NOT ALL WHITE

Shocked bride reveals her ‘frugal’ mother-in-law bought a WEDDING DRESS and wore it to her big day because she ‘couldn’t resist a bargain’

ROCKING up in white to someone else's wedding is without a doubt the greatest fashion cardinal rule you could possibly break.

But what happens when your mother-in-law is the one trying to steal attention away from you on your big day? Well, as one horrified bride can confirm, it's not the simplest way to start life as a married couple.

Sharing her experience on Twitter, Amy Pennza, from Ohio, was left stunned when her mother-in-law arrived at her big day in a wedding dress.

The American bride responded to US TV host Jimmy Fallon who had challenged his 51 million Twitter followers to share their worst "wedding fails".

And let's just say, Amy's experience blew our gendered wedding buffet menus and Bridezilla antics right out the water.

Challenging other Twitter users to "top" her experience, Amy confessed: "My mother-in-law wore a wedding dress to my wedding."

Amy then shared a photo of her and her mother-in-law both wearing white at the reception - and you can actually feel the tension just by looking at it.

Unsurprisingly, the internet was desperate to find out what happened next and over 2,000 users demanded to know more of the story.

"I didn't know what my mother-in-law planned to wear," Amy explained. "I didn't think to ask."

Recalling the morning of her wedding day, the bride wrote: "All the women in the bridal party cram into a tiny room in the church.

"You know, body glitter and hairspray everywhere. Fifteen coats of mascara. Putting napkins under your pits so you don't sweat on your dress.

"She walks in. I see it."

But while most brides would kick off about anyone wearing white (yet alone their mother-in-law), Amy managed to keep a cool head and says her memory of the day "is a blur".

The one thing she did say to her new relation? "You... You could be the bride..."

Staying on high alert in case a fight erupted between the two women, Amy's sister and university friend later "pulled her aside to talk about it".

The romance author recalls: "They both spent the reception looking at me, then each other, then MIL, then me, then the cop the venue made us hire - hoping I didn't go for his taser."

Despite the fashion faux pas, Amy joked: "I'm happy to report the wedding unfolded without bloodshed, or anyone being shoved into the champagne fountain."

We know what you're thinking: why on earth did Amy's mother-in-law think an actual wedding dress was an acceptable thing to wear to her son's - or anyone's for that matter - wedding?

Jumping to her defence, Amy revealed that her "mother-in-law is extremely frugal" and "grew up in extreme poverty".

She added: "When you grow up with nothing, it stays with you. Forever I think.";

The author went on to explain how her "hilarious" bargain hunting ways have made her a "legend" in the family as they "amuse [themselves] by telling stories of crazy s*** she's done to save money."

For instance, Amy's mother-in-law has been known to "take the olives and celery out of Bloody Marys to save for salads" or put the "discarded cold cuts from a Subway sandwich in a baggie because 'someone will eat them.'"

With this in mind, Amy wrote: "So when she spotted The Dress at an incredible bargain, she couldn't turn it down.

"If you ask her now, she says she feels terrible about it.

"Although she also told me, 'I think I've still got it. We should raffle it off.'"

Despite the mishap on her wedding day, Amy added: "She's frugal. But she's also incredible generous.

"When my twins were newborns, she drove across town every night, slept on the sofa, and did three feedings. For two babies. Every night for months."

Ultimately, Amy believes that her mother-in-law "can't resist a good bargain" which clouded her judgement in this instance.

She added: "So yeah, the wedding dress was a shock. But it gave me a pretty funny memory.

";No one who attended has every forgotten it. And, you have to admit weddings can be forgettable."

Luckily for the mother-in-law, Amy says "she has more than made up for it since" and actually gave her permission to share the story online.

Amy concluded: "And because I'm a romance author, I'd be remiss if I didn't add: And they lived happily ever after."
