What your sleep position says about your personality – and it’s bad news if you love napping on your front
YOUR taste in music, preferred holiday destination or beverage of choice can say a lot about who you are as a person, but did you know your sleeping position can reveal some interesting things about your personality too?
According to sleeping positions are subconscious and reflect your emotions and what is really going on inside you.
Because they're subconscious movements it's impossible to control your natural sleeping position, which means there's no hiding how you really feel when you're asleep!
Considering we spend one third of our lives catching Zs, deciphering our sleep positions can be a fun and enlightening way of figuring out what is going in yours or your significant other's life.
1. If you sleep on your stomach
This indicates you're a private person and perhaps a little closed off. Christopher Winter, author of The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broken believes this is a secure position.
"It's not the best choice for your airway or lower back, people who sleep in this position are very stoic.
"You kind of feel covered and protected, like a turtle with your shell, you may be more inward-looking than outward-projecting."
2. If you sleep on your back
This is a fairly confident position, particularly if you're someone who doesn't wear a lot of clothes. This is also the position animals sleep in if they feel comfortable with you.
director of the sleep assessment and advisory service told the BBC: "If you sleep lying on your back with both arms pinned to your sides, this means you don't like a fuss and set yourself and others high standards."
3. If you sleep in the foetal position
You're likely to be feeling a little insecure and may be in need of security and protection.
This position is a way of self comforting and protecting yourself from the world when you're feeling emotionally vulnerable.
"The most popular position, particularly among women, is the foetus.
"These people may appear tough, but are actually sensitive souls right to their core and are usually shy."
4. If you sleep on your side
This position is a combination of back and fetal, it quite literally balances you out. If you sleep like this, you're all about maintaining balance - in bed and in life.
According to a survey conducted by people who sleep on their left side tend to work in marketing and advertising.
Right side sleeping is favoured by those who work in transport and manufacturing.
5. If you switch between multiple positions
, switching sleep positions could mean you have a lot on your mind or could simply be about comfort level or reflect what's happening in your dream cycle.
"Perhaps there is a diagnostic meaning for someone who can't lay still all night, like restless legs for example."
Glass knows whichever position you fall asleep in, won't be the one you wake up in the next morning.
"When we do sleep studies, it's interesting how many people will tell you they sleep a certain way, but their body is completely different.
"The position you wake up in when it's time to rise and shine is likely more accurate than the one you fell asleep in."
