Why the Met Gala 2019 was just a flasher festival of nipples and bum cheeks – not a show of jaw-dropping fashion

Emily Ratajkowski, Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian left little to the imagination
IT'S supposed to be the biggest style spectacle of the year – but the Met Gala turned into just another excuse to strip off.
Attention seeking celebs including the ever-wilting wallflowers Emily Ratajkowski, Lady Gaga and Kim Kardashian flashed their flesh last night instead of fashion know-how.
Monday’s glittering benefit event, hosted in honour of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute, had the theme of “Camp”, as defined by Susan Sontag's 1964 essay Notes on Camp.
But many stars interpreted this as wearing as little threads as possible.
I'd be more shocked at seeing Emily wearing actual clothes for once as her dress, if you can even call it that, consisted of a see-through sarong and a few fabric strips tied to barely cover her most famous assets.
While walking the red carpet like a normal guest would never have sufficed for Met Gala chair Lady Gaga.
She shed four layered outfits like a stripping Russian doll, before revealing the finale - black underwear teamed with fishnets.
We've seen identical looks numerous times before in her music videos, so not much of a surprise there, plus - what would fellow host and Vogue editor Anna Wintour say?
Roll her eyes and cross Gaga off next year's invitee list, probably.
While Kim Kardashian opted for a skin coloured, latex dress accessorised with a bulging cleavage - and I'm not sure which part of her look was supposed to coincide with the Gala's Camp theme.
Next year they should save themselves the bother of thinking up a theme, and just encourage everyone to turn up in their pants.
The gala is the biggest event in the fashion fundraising calendar, with donations and proceeds going towards the Met's Costume Institute.
The annual event is a celebration of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is located in New York.
It is one of the world’s largest art galleries and is located on the eastern edge of Central Park along Manhattan’s Museum Mile.
Celebrities rock up to the city that never sleeps to pay tribute to the Costume Institute and their new exhibition.
Every year, the Met Gala runs with a specific concept and the 2019 theme is "Camp: Notes on Fashion."
The theme is inspired by a 1964 essay in which American author Susan Sontag defined camp by its "love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration".
Lady Gaga, Serena Williams and Harry Styles were chosen as the 2019 co-chairs alongside Vogue USA Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour and curator of the Costume Institute, Andrew Bolton.
Here are all the best looks from the red carpet at this year’s Met Gala event.
Elsewhere in Met Gala news, we revealed how the glamorous stars prepared for the occasion, including a topless Rita Ora.
Last year the stars were asked to dress to reflect "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination".
