Kate Middleton will wear the Queen Mother’s crown when Prince William becomes king and it’s decorated with 2,800 diamonds including 105-carat Kohinoor jewel
KATE Middleton will wear the Queen Mother's crown when Prince William becomes king.
The Duchess of Cambridge is likely to sport the priceless headpiece from the Crown Jewels - which features 2,800 diamonds as well as the famous 105-carat Kohinoor jewel - when she is made Queen consort.
As she is married to the second-in-line to the throne, the mum-of-three will one day become queen consort.
According to the royal family's website that "unless decided otherwise, a Queen consort is crowned with the King, in a similar but simpler ceremony".
This is what happened in the case of the Queen Mother - Elizabeth I's late mum - who was made queen consort when her husband George VI became king.
She wore a crown packed with diamonds for his coronation - and it is likely Kate will wear the same one too.
In 1937, it was created by the royal jeweller at the time, Garrard & Co., for the Queen Mother.
It features 2,800 diamonds, including notably the Kohinoor.
Weighing just over 21g, the jewel - which Pakistan and India have each in the past demanded be returned to them - sits in the middle of the front cross.
The famous diamond first came into the royal family's possession when it was given to Queen Victoria in 1849 by the Sultan of Turkey.
When she died it became part of the Crown Jewels and has featured in the crowns of Queen Alexandra and Queen Mary before being placed in the Queen Mother's crown.
When she passed away in 2002, the crown was placed on top of her coffin at her funeral.
The crown is currently kept as part of the Crown Jewels in the Tower Of London.
In December, Kate wore a stunning tiara previously given to Princess Diana as a wedding gift in 1981.
