Interior designer told that matching your furniture too much can make it look like a catalogue.

"I wouldn't buy matching a bed frame with matching end tables because it'll just make your room look like a catalogue," he explained.

"The best rooms are ones that look like they've been collected over time."

According to experts, having an overhead light isn't enough.

Interior designer explained "layering" lighting is the best approach and recommends both floor and table lamps.

Whatever you do, don't expose disorganised shelves.

"If you're going to have open storage, like shelves or nightstands that have an open base, it's really, really important to consider what you're going to be putting on that, because that becomes your design," explained Caitlin Murray of

According to experts, a rug in the living room should always be wider than the width of your furniture  - otherwise, it's too small.

When it comes to a rug in the bedroom, Murray says it should "run the long way of the bed" so it doesn't look misplaced under the bedside table.

Neglecting accessories

"It's always nice to have a budget made and leave some money for art and accessories," Moore explained.

"Those are just as important as the big pieces of furniture, the rugs, the TV, or whatever it is you want in your space."

Choosing oversized furniture

Christine Stucker of US company told that "less is more" when it comes to furnishing.

"By being smart about the pieces you buy, you can actually add more seating space without all of the bulk," she revealed.

"Daybeds and benches are perfect solutions for expanding seating space while still achieving a refined look.

"We also prefer sleek, streamlined sofas rather than bulky, oversized seating that adds heaviness to a room and takes away from the actual design."

Lack of contrast

Interior designer revealed one of the most common mistakes is not considering contrast between furnishings.

"When you take away the element of colour, you must focus on getting the necessary contrast and interest in other ways for the room to feel right," she told My Domaine.

If you're opting for a dark dining table, Hodges recommends choosing a lighter rug to achieve contact and opting for chairs that are "at least three shades lighter or darker".

Curtains that are too short

According to experts, it's the ultimate fail.

"Nothing looks odder than a long curtain that misses the floor by five inches," explained interior designer .

"It throws off the scale of the whole space."

Hodges added: "When it comes to the length of your drapes, anything that's more than an inch off the ground (literally) falls short.

"If you're purchasing ready-made, make sure that they touch the floor, even if you have to buy the next size up and have them hemmed."
