Have a clear out
- Dermalogica Clear Start Breakout Clearing Booster, £19.50 from Dermalogica -
PRODUCT: Dermalogica Clear Start Breakout Clearing Booster, £19.50, is a salicylic-acid-packed concoction that attacks blemish-inducing bacteria, clearing existing breakouts and preventing future ones.
PROS: I had a few spots when I started using the product, and within a couple of days they had cleared up. I suffer from breakouts quite often, but in the four weeks I used this, I didn’t have one blemish. It helped to lighten dark spots, too.
CONS: The smell of the product is a little strong at first, but I got used to it.
VERDICT: 9/10.
Plant power
- Quantum Botanika by Nataliya Robinson Spot Solution Treatment, £45 from Quantum Botanika by Nataliya Robinson -
PRODUCT: Quantum Botanika by Nataliya Robinson Spot Solution Treatment, £45, is a concentrated tonic that contains a host of vegan ingredients such as antiseptic witch hazel and exfoliating sugar cane.
PROS: I followed my usual skincare regime, cleansing and toning before applying a small amount of the solution and leaving it to dry, before slathering on my night cream. Within three days my spots were definitely drying up.
CONS: Don’t apply this in the morning as it leaves a gritty residue under make-up. I also felt like it stung my skin a little.
VERDICT: 8/10.
Keep it Simple
- Simple Daily Skin Detox SOS Clearing Booster, £5.99, Superdrug -
PRODUCT: Simple Daily Skin Detox SOS Clearing Booster, £5.99, is a hydrating gel that’s packed with detoxifying witch hazel, thyme and zinc to help balance out oily, blemished skin and reduce redness.
PROS: I’ve always searched for a product to clear my breakouts and improve general texture, and this worked really well on small blemishes and definitely improved the look and feel of my skin.
CONS: Although it was good for smaller imperfections, it didn’t work quite as well for bigger hormonal blemishes that start deep beneath the skin.
VERDICT: 7/10.
See ya, spots
- It Cosmetics Bye Bye Breakout Full-Coverage Concealer, £26.50, Cult Beauty -
PRODUCT: It Cosmetics Bye Bye Breakout Full-Coverage Concealer, £26.50, is make-up and zit zapper in one that contains kaolin clay and sulphur to fight imperfections and AHA and BHA acids to even tone.
PROS: This product works a treat to conceal blemishes – in fact, the coverage is amazing. It also disguised the small red veins under my eyes that I usually struggle to hide. Double win!
CONS: Although it reduced the size of some of my spots, it didn’t kill them off completely. I also think the bottle could be a bit bigger for the price.
VERDICT: 7/10.
Breakout buster
- Tropic Pure Lagoon Blemish Prevention Serum, £42, Tropic Skincare -
PRODUCT: Tropic Pure Lagoon Blemish Prevention Serum, £42, is a super-light serum boosted with skin-loving spirulina to soothe problem skin, hyaluronic acid to hydrate and prebiotics that help your skin to naturally fight off spot-causing bacteria.
PROS: I suffer from cystic acne, so was keen to see whether this would work. I didn’t develop any spots while using it, and I think it did help reduce existing ones. It’s a great everyday serum that won’t irritate sensitive skin.
CONS: It’s expensive, although it did feel very luxurious.
VERDICT: 8/10.

Zap that zit
- La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo+, £16, Boots -
PRODUCT: La Roche-Posay Effaclar Duo+, £16, is brimming with blemish-busting ingredients, such as niacinamide, lipo hydroxy acid and zinc. This sensitive-skin-friendly formula fights breakouts and mattifies oily complexions.
PROS: I’ve seen a massive reduction in the number of spots since I started using this product, and my skin is much less oily in general. It’s great to use in the morning before applying make-up, as it sinks in super-fast and works its magic all day.
CONS: My skin felt a little dry at times because it’s not as hydrating as other moisturisers, but I layered a thicker cream on top to fix this.
VERDICT: 8/10
