Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are NOT princesses because of The Queen, royal expert reveals

Victoria Arbiter claims the decision is all down to Her Majesty

ACCORDING to a royal expert, it is the Queen who decided that Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton would not go by the title of Princess.

Victoria Arbiter has explained that although it was previously thought Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall was the reason why the royals have the title of Duchess, this actually isn't the case.

In an episode of last month, Arbiter explained that although Camilla is legally Princess of Wales, the royal decided not to take on this title after marrying Prince Charles in 2005.

As the title was commonly associated with Princess Diana, the decision was said to be made as a mark of respect to Prince William and Prince Harry's late mother.

Instead, Camilla is referred to by her other title - Duchess of Cornwall.

In the episode, it was also suggested that Meghan and Kate go by the title of Duchess due to the fact Camilla does - something historian Kate Williams has suggested to be true.

Weighing in on The Royal Box conversation, she added: "That’s why it’s Duchess throughout the Royal Family - because Camilla is a Duchess.”

Now, Arbiter has claimed that it's actually down to the Queen - not Camilla - and the fact she gifted dukedoms to Prince Harry and Prince William.

"Had the Queen not conferred wedding day dukedoms on William and Harry, their wives would have been known as Princess William of Wales and Princess Henry of Wales in the same way Baroness Marie Christine von Reibnitz became Princess Michael of Kent upon her 1978 marriage to Prince Michael," Arbiter wrote on .

“Any changes are solely at the Queen’s discretion—not Camilla’s.

"Camilla, Catherine, Meghan and indeed the rest of the Royal Family’s stylings are steeped in centuries of royal history.

“The only person able to implement revisions or bestow titles is the sovereign."

“Should the Queen choose to do either, her decrees are based on a number of factors including changes that have been made to existing royal rules, long-standing tradition and the examples set by kings and queens who have gone before her," Arbiter continued.

"... One day, Catherine will be Princess of Wales and later Queen Consort, while Meghan will be assigned her place in history as the first ever Duchess of Sussex."
