LAW UNTO HERSELF

Mum reveals her mother-in-law CHANGED her baby’s name while she was recovering from a C-section… and she only realised two months later

The American woman was asleep when her mother-in-law 'manipulated' her husband

A MUM has revealed her mother-in-law convinced her husband to change her baby's name while she was recovering from a C-section - and she only discovered the truth two months later.

Writing to, the anonymous American woman revealed she was unconscious and recovering from a C-section when her in-laws decided to get involved.

She explained: "Apparently his mother guilt-tripped him into doing this while I was asleep after my emergency C-section.

"She tried to convince him to give our son a first name that I very much hated, saying that I would 'get mad, but get over it'."

Her mother-in-law lives in a different state a few hours away, so the entire conversation took place over the phone, but the husband insisted changing her son's first name was "too much".

But he did give into changing the tot's middle name from Finley to Finlay, which his mother thought sounded "more masculine", despite agreeing on the other spelling with his wife before she went into labour.

To add insult to injury, the woman's husband was too "afraid" to tell her what had happened.

She said: "He just let me keep believing for two months that our son’s middle name was spelled Finley when it legally isn’t!"

She only discovered his lie when their son was two months old, and the mum was filing his birth certificate away.

She added: "His mother has always been a manipulator and I have always known she doesn’t like me.

"But she blatantly disrespected me and the name my husband and I had chosen for our son."

The mum realises the blame ultimately lies with her husband, but reckons something needs to be said to her mother-in-law.

She was asking advice from Slate's parenting Agony Aunt who advised steering clear from saying anything to her mother-in-law - in case things got even more heated.

"What in the entire f*** is up with your husband?" she wrote. "I’m mad just reading about this. You and your kid deserve so much better."
