Jameela Jamil slams ‘clowns’ at Avon for ‘body shaming’ women with cellulite cream
The actress and advocate for body positivity took to Twitter to slam the company’s latest ad campaign for skincare range Naked Proof
JAMEELA Jamil has hit back at body shamers again, this time getting her claws into the ‘clowns’ at Avon over their new anti-cellulite cream.
The actress and advocate for body positivity took to Twitter to slam the company’s latest ad campaign for skincare range Naked Proof.
One of the #NakedProof adverts that angered the 32-year-old shows a woman in her underpants alongside a slogan that reads: “Dimples are cute on your face (not on your thighs)”.
Clapping back, Jameela tweeted back: “And yet EVERYONE has dimples on their thighs, I do, you do, and the CLOWNS at @Avon_UK certainly do.
“Stop shaming women about age, gravity and cellulite. They're inevitable, completely normal things. To make us fear them and try to ‘fix’ them, is to literally set us up for failure.”
The tweet was met with applause from women worldwide, racking up thousands of likes and shares within hours.
Many also took to social media to thank The Good Place star for calling out yet another body shaming campaign publicly.
Jameela shared a number of other offending posters as part of the Avon campaign.
One ad saw a woman dancing half-dressed alongside the caption “buh-bye cellulite” with the promise of “dramatic results in just four weeks”.
Another advert was captioned “Every body is beautiful” but went on to promise reduced cellulite, firmed skin and softened stretch marks.
Lashing out at the series of adverts, Jameela tweeted: “Shame on @AvonInsider and any publication that allows this sort of abusive advertising.
“My timeline is full of women saying adverts like these are why they are afraid to be naked in front of lovers, or to wear a swimsuit.
“You are being robbed of your money and self esteem.”
She continued: “Every body is beautiful, unless they have any “flaws” I guess. What a gross abuse of the body positive movement.
“I want you all to look out for this constant manipulation.
“Once you see it, you can’t unsee it. It’s everywhere.
“You are constantly being manipulated to self hate.”
While Avon UK claimed no responsibility for the campaign, Avon US stepped up and accepted that the advertising was off the mark.
They tweet the star back saying: “Hi Jameela, we intended this to be light hearted and fun, but we realize we missed the mark.
“We've removed this messaging from all marketing materials.
“We support our community in loving their bodies and feeling confident in their own skin.”
Fans were delighted with the star’s efforts to get the body positive message out there, with one notably replying: “Can you get a time machine and tell that to 11 year old me? Thank you for doing this work.”
Another tweeted: “I love you so much for always calling this stuff out.
“It's SO important to realise that any company that profits off of you disliking your body will never ever be body positive no matter what they say in their marketing.
“This implies she can only feel confident and powerful once her legs have less cellulite and stretch marks. Complete fail. Self-love is free! Thank you for calling them out!”
